Why You Will Love This Cheesesteak Dip

  • Easy Dip Recipe – Philly cheesesteak takes around 30 minutes to make and uses simple ingredients.
  • Cheesy Dip —This delicious dip recipe features all the flavors of a classic cheesesteak sandwich.
  • Game Day Favorite – A unique game day dip that will be requested for years to come!

Simple Ingredients

  • Butter: Use a little bit of butter (salted or unsalted butter) or use olive oil if preferred.
  • Veggies: Classic flavors include diced yellow onions, garlic and green peppers. We used red bell peppers for color, but go with your favorite color; of course, green bell peppers are classic.
  • Worcestershire sauce: Worcestershire sauce adds a savory flavor to the Philly cheesesteak dip. Make sure GF if that matters.
  • Beef: I keep it simple with deli roast beef slices chopped and mixed into the cheesy base. But you could also use quick-cooking shaved steak!
  • Cream cheese: Room temperature cream cheese will better mix for a creamy dip.
  • Sour cream: Sour cream thins the thick base of cream cheese and adds tanginess.
  • Cheese: For extra smooth cheesiness, use shredded or freshly grated provolone and melty mozzarella cheese for the best results.

Let’s Make This Steak and Cheese Dip Recipe

Step 1 | Preheat and prep

First, preheat the oven to 375° F (190° C) and grease the baking dish with spray oil or a little butter, setting it aside for later.

Step 2 | Saute veggies and beef

Add butter to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once melted, add the onions and bell peppers, reduce to medium heat, and cook for 5 to 7 minutes until softened. Then, add the minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, kosher salt, and black pepper and continue cooking for another minute. Mix in the roast beef until warmed, and remove the pan from the heat.

Step 3 | Combine all dip ingredients

Now, add the softened cream cheese and sour cream to another bowl and cream the ingredients with a hand mixer until well combined and smooth. Stir in the shredded mozzarella cheese and half of the provolone slices, then add the roast beef, sauteed onions, and peppers until evenly incorporated.

Fresh Tips

  • If you forget to set the cream cheese out to soften to room temperature, you can soften it in the microwave: unwrap and place on a safe plate, heat for 10-12 seconds, or cut it into small cubes, and it will be softened by the time you assemble.

Step 4 | Bake, garnish, enjoy!

Spoon the Philly cheesesteak mixture into the prepared baking dish and top it with the rest of the provolone cheese. Bake the dip for 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Garnish the hot dip with fresh chopped parsley and serve warm with your favorite dippers, like crackers, chips, and veggie sticks!

Variations & Substitutions

Add-Ins: Customize the dip with more delicious add-ins. Turn up the heat with cayenne pepper and jalapenos. Or, bring even more flavor to the tasty dip with pepperoncini or sliced mushrooms.

Try Different Cheeses: Try combining different varieties of cheese, such as American, cheddar, or parmesan, to find your favorite cheese blend.

Shaved Steak: Like in these roast beef sliders, use cooked roast beef is a shortcut, but try using shaved beef for an amazing dip! And be sure to try my Philly Cheesesteak sliders and this Steak and Cheese Sandwich.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I  serve Philly Cheesesteak Dip?

Serve this Philly cheesesteak sandwich dip with all your favorite classic dippers, like tortilla chips, pita, toasted baguette slices (aka crostini), carrot chips, or celery sticks.

Can I make Philly Cheesesteak Dip ahead of time?

Absolutely! Complete the entire recipe, let it cool, then cover it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store in the fridge. When ready to serve, bake it for about 5 or 10 minutes longer than initially to account for the chill.

Can I use different meats for this dip?

Sure! You can use thinly sliced steak, like ribeye, skirt steak, or even ground beef, if preferred. It’s also a great recipe to use up leftover steak or leftover roast beef or leftover tenderloin. Or try with your favorite deli meat.

What is a Philly cheesesteak Sandwich?

A Philly cheesesteak is a classic sandwich originally made in Philadelphia. It is typically served on a French roll or hoagie bread and stuffed with shaved steak, onions, peppers, and white American cheese. Sometimes, cheez whiz and mushrooms are added, too.

Storage Tips

Refrigerate—Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days. Because of the cheese and dairy ingredients, it’s not recommended to freeze the dip.

Reheating—When you’re ready to serve the leftover Philly cheesesteak dip again, add it to an oven-safe dish and bake it until heated through. Or, heat it in the microwave for 30-second intervals.

What to Serve with Cheesesteak Party Dip

  1. Air Fryer Turkey Wings
  2. Bavarian Pretzel (would be so good in this dip!)
  3. Burrata Pesto Appetizer makes enough crostini for both dips!

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375° F (190° C) . Grease a baking dish with spray oil and set aside.
  • Melt butter (2 TBL) in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the minced garlic (2 cloves), Worcestershire sauce (1 TBL), salt (½ tsp), and pepper (¼ tsp), and cook for one minute more. Stir in the roast beef (½ lb, chopped) until just warmed through, then remove from heat.
  • In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese (8 oz, softened) and sour cream (¼ cup) together with a hand mixer until smooth. Stir in shredded mozzarella cheese (½ cup) and half of the provolone cheese (6 slices, chopped). Add the roast beef mixture and stir until well combined.

Notes

  • The cream cheese should be softened to room temperature. This will give you a smooth and creamy result with no lumps.
  • Freshly grated cheese is best for flavor and melting.
  • If you can find bulk provolone, you can grate it yourself. My store only had slices, so I just chopped it up. Stack the slices, then cut into thin strips. Turn the strips so they are horizontal, and slice them into squares. It doesn’t have to be perfect—it’ll all be melted!
EXPERT TIPS:
  • Did you forget to soften the cream cheese? Cut the block in half, place it on a microwave-safe plate, and heat 10 seconds. Flip the blocks over and heat for 10 seconds more. Repeat the process until the cream cheese is at room temperature. Be careful not to melt it. It’s important to do 10-second intervals.
  • Change it up with some add-ins: cayenne pepper, jalapenos, Pepperoncini, or sliced mushrooms.
  • Feel free to experiment and find the perfect cheese blend that suits your taste. Try American, white cheddar, parmesan, or a mix.
  • Can I use shaved steak for this recipe? You bet. After sautéing your onions and peppers, add ½ pounds of shaved steak to the skillet and stir fry for a few minutes. It will cook quickly. Proceed with the recipe.
Storage
Store cooled leftovers in airtight container in fridge up to 4 days. Reheat by placing back in oven (oven safe dish) and warm until hot. Or microwave in 30 second bursts, stir and heat until warmed through. It is not recommended to freeze this dip.
Make Ahead – Assemble the steak and cheese dip, cover with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate up to 1 day ahead. When ready, remove from fridge while oven preheats and heat as directed, baking a few minutes longer since it came from the fridge.

I made this for a Super Bowl party and it was a hit! I doubled the beef and it still turned out great. We’re going low carb, so we ate ours with celery instead of bread and it tasted amazing!
