Why You Will Love These Hash Brown Patties

- Convenient meal on-the-go: Perfect for busy mornings.
- Save money: Make your own hash brown patties instead of buying from fast food restaurants.
Simple Ingredients to Make Hash Brown Patties in Air Fryer
- Frozen hash brown patties | This recipe requires a box of frozen hashbrown patties; that’s it! My favorites are from Trader Joe’s. Use whichever brand is your favorite.
Healthy Twist
Air frying tasty hash browns is a healthier alternative to deep frying. Air fryer recipes don’t need extra oil to produce crisp results, as hot air circulates and crisps the food without oil.
How to Make Hash Brown Patties in Air Fryer
How to Make Air Fryer Hashbrowns from Frozen
Unpackage frozen hash brown patties and place them in a single layer in the air fryer tray. Cook in batches if necessary, depending on the size of your air fryer.
Preheat the air fryer temperature between 390° F (199° C) – 400° F (205° C) to cook the patties. Mine are usually done around the 10-11 minute mark, check the progress at 10-12 minutes. The hashbrowns should be golden brown.
If they aren’t fully cooked, give them a couple more minutes and check again. Typically, you shouldn’t have to flip them. If you prefer, flip each hash brown patty at halfway to the cooking time or about five minutes after starting the air fryer.
Once golden brown and crispy, carefully remove the hot hash browns from the air fryer using tongs. If you enjoy extra crispy hash browns, cook them for 2-3 minutes longer. Avoid exceeding 18 minutes, or they may begin to burn or become overly dry.
Sprinkle the crispy hash brown patties with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper —ENJOY!
How to Cook Air Fryer Hash Browns Not Frozen in Air Fryer
If you are air frying thawed hash browns (not frozen), this is still a simple recipe. Lightly spritz each one with spray oil. A little oil helps the hash brown patties become nice and crunchy on the outside. If desired, add an air fryer liner to the bottom of the air fryer basket.
Next, lay two to four patties in an even layer in the basket and cook them for about five minutes. Then, flip the hash browns and continue frying for another five minutes. Like the directions above, cook the potatoes for up to 18 minutes if you prefer extra crisp hash browns. Depending on your air fryer model, you may not need to flip them.
Fresh Tips
- For best results, keep an eye on them the cooking process, removing them when they reach your desired level of crispiness.
- Enhance the crispiness by spraying vegetable oil on the frozen hash browns, such as avocado oil.

Pro Tips
- All air fryers heat at varying degrees, use this recipe as a guideline to find your perfect doneness, then jot it down for the next time.
- Flipping may not be necessary due to the air fryer’s heat circulation, but flipping can help ensure even cooking if the basket is crowded.
Storage Tips
Refrigerate Leftover Hash Browns – If you have extras, place them in the fridge inside an airtight container or zip lock bag for short-term storage. They’ll last a few days in the refrigerator.
Freezer – For longer storage of your crispy hash browns, store cooled patties in a freezer bag or tightly sealed container in the freezer, for 3-4 months. But honestly, I’ve discovered some that have been in there much longer and they are fine.
Reheating – When you’re ready to serve them again, use the same method described in the recipe—EASY!
My Favorite Air Fryers and Tools

- Ninja Foodi Air Fryer & Indoor Grill — a nice wide and easy-to-operate air fryer.
- My favorite Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (it does it all!), love this air fryer, countertop oven.
- Invest in air fryer liners for easier clean-up; these fit the Ninja Foodi XL above, be sure to find the size that fits your air fryer. Parchment paper made for air fryers or use silicone liners instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely! And it might be easier than you think—First, thaw the frozen shredded potatoes, then pat them with paper towels to remove any excess moisture. Now, make small flat patties out of the shredded pieces. The thinner the patties are, the quicker they will fry and be extra crispy!
Then, spray each with oil—not non-stick cooking spray (it will gum up your air fryer) and season with kosher salt and pepper. Use the directions in this recipe to cook the hash browns, possibly flipping them halfway through.
If you prefer to make your crispy air fryer hash browns from scratch, go for it! Frozen patties aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. So, find a recipe for delicious homemade hash browns and cook them in your air fryer using the instructions you would use if cooking the store-bought kind.
When you cook them from frozen, there’s a chance for excess moisture to escape as they thaw and fry. In that case, your hash browns may not be as crispy as you’d like. Cooking them for a little longer usually solves this issue. It could also be that your air fryer is not hot enough, all air fryers heat slightly different.
However, suppose you cook the patties after they have thawed and still produce mushy hash browns. Try patting them dry with paper towels before adding them to the air fryer next time.
