Healthy Twist

  • Swap Out the Mayo – Nonfat Greek yogurt is the best substitute for mayonnaise in blue cheese and reduces the fat content greatly, you could also try using sour cream.
  • Skim Milk – Use a low-fat buttermilk or make your own buttermilk with some fresh lemon juice and cow’s milk or plant-based milk.
  • No preservatives! Yup, just real, delicious ingredients.

Is it Blue Cheese or Bleu Cheese?

Ever wondered? I did! In America, the common spelling for the cheese variety is “blue cheese,” with the word “blue” referring to the blue veins or spots that are characteristic of the cheese. The spelling “bleu cheese” is more commonly used in French, as “bleu” means blue in French.

What type of blue cheese should I use for blue cheese dressing?

Use any kind of blue cheese you prefer for this creamy dressing, and the choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. I used Danish Blue cheese, but have used all types below. I love them all, here are some popular options:

  1. Roquefort: A creamy blue cheese made from sheep’s milk that has a distinct tangy and sharp flavor. It crumbles easily and blends well with other ingredients, Roquefort blue cheese dressing is one of my favorites.
  2. Gorgonzola: Also a creamy cow’s milk blue cheese that is milder and is less pungent than Roquefort. It has a creamy texture and is often used in salads and dressings.
  3. Danish Blue: This is a soft blue cheese made from cow’s milk that has a mild flavor and a crumbly texture. It is less pungent than other blue cheeses and is a good option for those who prefer a milder taste.
  4. Stilton: This is a crumbly blue cheese made from cow’s milk that has a rich and creamy flavor. It is often used in dressings and is also a popular cheese for cheeseboards.
  5. Maytag Blue: Made from cow’s milk that is creamy and tangy with a milder flavor than some other blue cheeses. It is often used in dressings and dips.

When making homemade blue cheese dressing, it is important to crumble the cheese finely and to mix it thoroughly with the other ingredients to ensure a smooth and creamy texture. If chunky blue cheese is preferred, leave some larger chunks and stir in at the end.

Simple Ingredients

Ingredients, directions and nutritional information in the printable recipe card at the end of the post.

  • Onion powder and garlic powder | Classic flavors that deepen as it sits.
  • Parsley | Freshly chopped parsley adds a refreshing herby taste. If preferred, substitute it with dried parsley.
  • Mayonnaise | I like to use avocado mayo for this homemade blue cheese dressing, but you can use your favorite.
  • Buttermilk | Use whole buttermilk for the richest flavor. Or make your own buttermilk. See the FAQs to learn how! *Making it Keto? Use heavy cream, almond milk or your favorite milk in place of the buttermilk, add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, stir and let sit until thickened.
  • Red wine vinegar | You may replace with white wine vinegar.
  • Blue cheese | Of course, you’ll also need some blue cheese crumbles. See the list of common blue cheeses to use for this easy recipe.
  • Salt and pepper | Sprinkle in some kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

How to Make Your Own Blue Cheese Dressing Recipe

Mix ingredients in a bowl, transfer to a jar, chill to thicken and develop flavors. That’s it!

Fresh Tip

  • If you prefer creamier blue cheese, then use a spoon or spatula and smoosh the blue cheese crumbles against the side of the bowl to create a creamy dressing.
  • Or break up the blue cheese into fine crumbles ahead of time. Easily do this by freezing the crumbles for 20-30 minutes, then breaking them up as you add them to the bowl.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I adjust the consistency of homemade blue cheese dressing?

To thicken the blue cheese dressing, add finely crumbled blue cheese crumbles, stirring them in well to combine, you could even whir them in a blender for a second. It helps to let the dressing sit in the refrigerator to thicken up. For thinner blue cheese dip, you can add more buttermilk to the recipe or pour in some half-and-half or milk.

How do you make buttermilk?

It’s easy to make buttermilk with ingredients on hand! Add a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to a one-cup measuring cup, and add your favorite milk. Stir and let sit for 7-10 minutes; it will thicken and sour slightly.

Is blue cheese healthy?

If you are eating low-carb or on a keto diet, then blue cheese is the perfect dressing choice for you, made with simple, whole food ingredients, it is naturally low-carb.

Best Ways to Store Blue Cheese Dressing

How long can homemade blue cheese dressing last in the fridge?

When stored correctly in an airtight container, your homemade blue cheese dressing should last 5-7 days in the refrigerator. I tuck it in the back of my fridge where it is coldest, and often it is good for much longer. The bottom line is to check for any signs of mold or spoiling, such as an off smell or appearance.

Can I freeze homemade blue cheese dressing?

I don’t recommend freezing blue cheese dressing because the dairy content will split as it freezes. This will ruin the texture and taste of the dressing when thawed to serve.
